Presentation by CHIAKI

In this evening talk, CHIAKI, a Japanese born calligrapher based in Copenhagen from New York, presents Japanese Craftmanship and the philosophy behind the concepts of Shokunin and Takumi from creates point of view. Being a shokunin is more than technical mastery — it is a way of life defined by dedication, discipline, and integrity. A true shokunin often spends decades perfecting a single craft, guided by respect for materials, tradition, and the community they serve. Japanese craftsmanship is therefore shaped not only by skill but also by ethical and spiritual values rooted in history and social responsibility.

CHIAKI will also discuss how regional environments, local resources, and centuries- old traditions in Japan have shaped distinctive techniques and aesthetics that are passed down through generations. Through examples from ceramics, textiles, lacquerware, woodworking, and calligraphy, the talk offers insight into the philosophy and practice behind Japanese craftsmanship.

The presentation will be in English.
